I have reason to believe caramelised onion is invented by a man because he forgot he was cooking onions and too poor to throw it out but end up finding it tastes yummy.

It takes way longer than 5-10 minutes. It takes way too fucking long. Mine get about halfway there then all the other cooking is done but not the onions.

But... It does take 5-10 mins. For better results, you can speed it up by adding a little bit of sugar. Salt will help break down the onion for faster results too.

Why is it called "caramelizing onions" when it is in fact slow cooking them? I mean yes, it makes them look like caramel, I get that, but why not avoid the confusion entirely? Let's be real, if you've never heard of caramelized onions before, chances are rather high that you'd believe it is putting caramel on onions. What else would it be?
